Sunshine Sailors Simply Smash Sun Sail ….

The annual Tooheys Sun Sail regatta hosted by Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, the richest annual yachting regatta on the Lake,  has been run and won for another year, and what it year it has been for mighty ‘Team SLMASC’.

Represented by The Other Woman, Outlandish, Stealthy and Undecided, team SLMASC took on the best of best, and as usual made the ‘big boys’ sit up and takes lots of notice of ‘that little club somewhere at the bottom of the lake’. Sailed in perfect light conditions, The Other Woman was in sizzling form, simply smashing the fleet by taking out two 2nd places on handicap to win the overall regatta (and a charter yacht on the Whitsundays for a week courtesy of Sun Sail. I bet Doug has lots of new best friends!).

Interviewed after the race, Sailing Master Douglas BrownStock yelled of the win: “Wooooo, Woooooo, WooooHooooooo, Woooooooo, WooooooHooooooHooooooo, Wooooooo ….. I can’t believe we won …… Woooooooo, WooooooHooooo, Woooooo, Woooooo Hooooooooo, Whooooo!” (end quote). You possibly heard the interview live from the Sunshine foreshore upon return to the moorings late on Sunday night. The full crew of the ‘Brown Boat’ (The Other Woman) was Doug BrownStock (sailing master and wind whisperer), Michael Brown (Helmsman), Glenn Brown (Chief Buffer), Nick Auston-Brown (Frontier Land), Dan Worthington-Brown (Adventure Land), and Darren Harper- Brown (Fantasy Land), all sailed brilliantly and made the most of the ideal conditions. When asked to comment on the efforts of his crew, Brownstock sung their praises continually saying “Wooooooo WoooooHoooooo, Woooooo, Woooooo Hoooooooooooooo ….. ”

Although unable to quite match it in the conditions with The Other Woman, all of the SLMASC boats raced hard and placed extremely well in both individual races and overall, with Outlandish finishing in a tie for 7th, Stealthy in 13th, and Undecided in their first major regatta as part of Team SLMASC finishing in a creditable 25th in the large fleet.  As a result, for the second year running, and much to the surprise (and great annoyance) of the crews of the 40+ footer brigade and all of the entrants from other lake clubs, SLMASC defended the teams title won last year,  again taking out the Tooheys Sun Sail Regatta Teams Event in convincing style. Well done to all SLMASC crews for some great sailing and a well deserved victory. During the presentation at LMYC on Sunday afternoon, the ‘South Lakes’ chant broke out (with plenty of WooooHooooo’s ….. I’m not sure LMYC was quite ready for us!) with our crews then taking over the club to savour the sweetest of victories.

It was a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable weekend for all involved, and a massive challenge has now been set to make it three in a row for Team SLMASC at Sun Sail next year. It’s a great regatta with plenty of great prizes, and everyone has a chance of winning on handicap on the day, beating even the biggest and fastest yachts on the lake. SLMASC can enter more than one team next year, so make sure you circle the date on next years’ sailing program when it is published and get your boat and crew organised. SLMASC can do it again, and again, and again.

Team SLMASC ….….. Wooooo Hoooo!!

Zhik ….. Set For Lift-Off !

It’s on again …. the Zhik Single Hander Regatta comes to SLMASC this weekend, and the competition for placings in the ‘Zhik Top Ten’ is going to be HOT!

Racing starts on Saturday at 2pm, with 2 races scheduled back to back in multiple divisions on a trapizoidal course. Sunday sees another 2 races scheduled back to back from 12.30pm, with the presentation to the Zhik Top Ten and overall winner being held in the club after racing.

The high performance foiling moths will buzz the fleet completing 3 laps, with most other classes completing 2 laps. All classes compete on a ‘yardstick’ basis for the overall honours in the Zhik Top Ten, so anyone can win on the day.

Zhik are again the major sponsor, having donated several thousand dollars worth of prizes to bring the top sailors together for this classic annual shoot out. (Rumour has it …. not that we like to spread them …. that a few of the worlds top dinghy sailors may be entering this year. Names that we guarantee you will know 😉 ….. and you’ll kick yourself if you miss seeing them in action over the weekend!)

It’s going to be spectacular with great sailing conditions forecast, so if you can’t be on the water yourself (entries are still open until Saturday midday), make sure to visit the club to view the action and enjoy the event.

If you can spare a couple of hours, we are also looking for volunteers to assist with tasks on or off water, so let us know ( slmasc@hotmail.com ) if you can help out and we promise you’ll have a great time while doing it!

Hope to see you at the Zhik 2011 …..

PS …. to all Yacht Skippers sailing on Sunday. For Safety and fair competion, the Race committe reminds all yacht skippers of the requirement in the yacht sailing instructions to remain clear of the start/finish line of another division (including dinghy events and the Zhik regatta). Failure to observe this requirement may result in the yacht being scored DSQ. The Race committe will endeavour to set the regatta start/finish line in the middle of the bay, however depending on the wind direction it may be impossible to totally avoid some overlap with all yacht courses. To help ensure the success of this major event hosted SLMASC, your cooperation is both appreciated and expected. Smooth Sailing ….

IMPORTANT – Attention All Yacht Skippers.

New Yacht Courses for Sunday Summer Series.

The Sailing Committee has revised the Sunday Yacht Courses and the new courses will be adopted from the start of the Sunday Summer Series.Note that there have been no changes made to Twilight Courses.

A great deal of work has gone into this revision of the courses to attempt to the standardise the length of courses to make handicapping fairer. The new courses are slightly longer however, so Handicaps have also be revised accordingly with most boats receiving a lift to reflect the slightly longer race time.

Make sure that you print off a set of the new courses and take them with you on Sunday. If you seem to be sailing in the opposite direction to the rest of the fleet ….. check that you are looking at the new course sheet (and tear up the old one!).

If you have any feedback regarding these course amendments, drop around to the club on Monday evenings from 7pm to discuss.

Hope to see you on the water this week end.

Smooth Sailing
