SLMASC Laser Squads tackles the Coast ….

The Laser Coast Championships were sailed at Toronto last weekend (15-16 Oct) and for the first time our ‘SLMASC Laser Squad’ travelled away together to take on the best on the coast.

SLMASC was represented by Sam Booth, Scott Singleton-Turner, Scott Charlton, Joel Newman, and Jordan Gates in the Laser 4.7 class, with Clive Jones sailing in the full rig division.

Conditions were quite light and shifty on the Saturday, and slightly stronger on Sunday, with 5 of the planned 6 races being able to be sailed.

All sailors represented the club well in the tricky unfamiliar conditions, with Sam Booth finishing 2nd in the 4.7’s, and Scott Singleton-Turner being just pipped for a podium finish, finishing in 4th place. Both Sam and Scott also managed a race win each in their division (the smiles were priceless).

The newly formed ‘SLMASC Laser squad’ have plans to tackle other major regatta’s togther during the current season, beginning with the Zhik Single Handed Regatta on their home turf in just over a week’s time. If they can do this well in their first major away regatta, be watching for some great results from them at home in the Zhik next week!

Isn’t it great to see how quickly these guys (and gals) have progressed. This time last year most of them had just moved out of sabots, purchased their first Laser and were wondering if they were up to even entering in a regatta …. now they’re winning at them! Great to see not only the excellent results and level of improvement, but also the way they’re doing it …. having lots of fun togther.

Well done to all who competed …. bring on the Zhik!

We’re Off and Racing …..

Last Sunday saw the official start of the 2011-12 season and what a great day it turned out to be. There was a good rollup for Learn to Sail classes, Dinghy and Yacht racing, encouraged no doubt by the pleasant change in the weather on Sunday morning. Light but shifty breezes ensured everyone could ease there way back into the swing of things (except for the course setters!), but also made for some great close racing through out each of the fleets.

The weather forecast for all of this week is simply stunning right through until early next week, so if you missed getting out on the water last week, start making your plans for this weekend. Summer is knocking on the door, so get organised and make the most of it.

Lifes to short to miss a week of sailing!

Only 4 sleeps to Go !!!

With only 4 sleeps to go until the official launch of the 2011-12 sailing season, sailors of all ages are starting to get a bit twitchy.

Winter is now behind us and we have the whole season ahead …. so let’s make this one to remember.

Learn to Sail will kick off proceedings at the club on Sunday morning from 11.00am.

Dinghy and Yacht racing will commence Sunday afternoon as per the program.

All yacht racing documentation has been finalised and has now posted on the Documents pages on the website ( www.slmasc.org ). Yacht Racing Documentation can be found under the ‘Documents & Links’ menu option at the top of the home page, under the ‘Documents – Yachts’ page.

Looks like the weather is going to behave with fine weather and good winds forecast for Sunday (Saturday is a bit dodgey though).

Round up the crew, clean down the boat, and get out on the water this weekend ….. bring it on!

Hope to see you about the club on Sunday and over the coming weeks.

Smooth sailing for the 2011-12 season.
